A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
